I hate my genetics. All the men in my family were over six feet tall with large muscular builds.
I was the “runt of the litter.”
Five foot nine. Skinny as a stick.
I’m an “ectomorph.” Small bones and small muscles. The best part?
High body fat.
Body-builders call us “hard gainers” or “pencil necks” or the ever so flattering “skinny fat.”
[Imagine Jon Heder, the actor that played Napoleon Dynamite.]
After a few unpleasant wake up calls during my late forties, I decided it was time for a change. Since everything pretty much sucked, I thought it best to change everything. I especially didn’t like the person in mirror [that had grown only in circumference] so I decided to start with him.
Knowing I’d never be big and buff, I decided I could at least look healthy instead of lazy, so I went on a personal “six pack quest.” I dieted down from a high of 185 to a low of 135. Meaning around one third of my weight was nothing but fat.
Still no six pack.
I did however, succeed at looking like a skeleton- with a spare tire. I suppose I could have lost the little spare tire that hid my last row of abs by dropping another 10 pounds. But I didn’t see the point in becoming even scarier looking. That’s just my genetics. Small bones, small muscles, along with storing body fat VERY easily, particularly around the waist.
I hate my genetics, and everyday I fight them.
I have to eat a very clean diet and do cardio, because if I don’t, that little spare tire inflates, seemingly overnight. I have to lift weights to prevent my muscles from going to the state they’re programmed to be in: Little. [The photo on the blog header is where I “bulked up” to a whopping 155 pounds.]
Here’s the moral of the story:
The desire to “do something” about my lousy genetics had a very unintended and unexpected result. I didn’t just change physically- I changed on the inside- where it counts. In other words, my genetics weren’t the problem. The person I had let myself become was the problem. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the only way I was ever going to fix myself physically, was to first fix myself mentally. To change, I had to see things in my life “as they were.” Not how I thought they were or wished them to be.
Was I in for an unpleasant surprise.
I wasn’t the one in control of my life, and what was in the mirror was a reflection of that. After going though a lot of misinformation, I did change myself. I also realized it didn’t matter exactly what natural foods I ate or exactly what exercises I did.
What mattered is I discovered how to be the one in control of very powerful and very exploited emotions.
What mattered was I was able to “see” the reason it was so easy for “life” to kick me around.
I had no direction or self discipline- the proverbial ship without a rudder- pushed around by circumstances that always seemed to have the upper hand.
Now I’m the one in control. Now my future is decided by me.
Regardless of the genetics you have, transforming your body will go way beyond what’s in the mirror for you as well.
The truth is, we live in a world that relentlessly pressures us to do the opposite of what’s best for a long and healthy life.
Being the one in control of the shape of your body, gives you one of life’s most all critical, all encompassing skills:
The ability to see where you’re making damaging choices, and develop the faith, courage, and discipline to do something about them.
Yes, looking and feeling half your age is a great benefit.
Saying “I did it” will do wonders for your self esteem.
Heading off cancer, diabetes, heart attack, or a stroke has it’s perks as well.
Having more energy to enjoy your spouse or children… the list goes on.
But having the ability to make decisions that are in your long term best interest… while the world uses every dirty trick it can to make you fail… that’s what will grant a clarity and personal freedom that is truly priceless… and prepare you for whatever the future holds.
That’s how a new body, gives you a new life.
To your health and success, and may God bless,
Michael
