If you’re like most women, you’re reading this blog because your looking to learn more about weight loss and getting fit with exercise programs and routines. Let me tell you the most important thing about diet and exercise that you need to know:
The exact exercise or routine you choose DOES NOT MATTER.
What matters more than anything is this: If you want to live the longest and most healthy life possible, you need to make some sort of strength and cardio training a habit.
Exactly what you do doesn’t matter. There is no “best exercise” for women. Women’s health, fitness and exercise is just like mens. Walking, jogging, running, swimming, weight lifting, yoga, elliptical- the specifics don’t matter.
What matters is that you challenge your muscles and aerobic capacity.
You will find an endless list of companies that want to sell you something. Some will be total scams [diets, pills, teas, patches, berries, herbs, etc]. Others will have legitimate products that can help you [sport specific apparel, fitness DVD’s, books, and workout equipment].
Some cardio, some strength training exercises are all you need. You can change up your routines and workouts after you get started. What matters more than anything is getting started- and never giving up.
If you’ve gotten out of shape, I know it can be challenging to get going. I blew off by health and exercise habits for 30 years. Then age 49, I didn’t like what was looking back at me in the mirror [on a lot of levels]. I had no idea what to do. All I knew is that I had to take action.
I bought a few copies of Muscle and Fitness. I bought a free weight set. I tried to go running. When that didn’t work I tried walking and running. When that didn’t work [I had leg braces as a child and running hurts my joints] I tried a stair stepper machine. That I could handle.
Re read that last paragraph because you just found the “secret” to lasting health and fitness.
When you’re faced with a diet or routine that you don’t like, you DON’T QUIT. You look for an “alternative solution.”
That one skill [which losing weight and getting in shape teaches you in spades] is a life changing ability that will serve you for the rest of your life. Arnold Schwarzenegger summed it up perfectly:
“Once you have the ability to change the shape of your body, you have the ability to accomplish anything.”
That’s because losing weight with a healthy diet and exercise routine forces you to see things as the are- and forces you to do something about them. When you have the discipline to do that [because the emotions that tell you to eat poorly and be lazy are very powerful] the discipline to accomplish whatever else you want to accomplish in life feels easy by comparison.
So don’t worry about the finding the best exercises and routines. Focus on acquiring healthy habits. It’s the habits that will transform your body and future- not a specific ab, leg, or chest exercise.
